Alberta Classic Eye Sign

Below are some definitions as used on this website, especially the dicussion forum at
http://www.albertaclassic.com/cgi-bin/discussions/cutecast.pl

Please guide your mouse over the various terms.
the pupil
circle of adaptation
folds
circle of correlation
distance lines
the iris
circle of health
The above represents what can be seen in a pigeon eye. Some other eyes also show "speed lines" which traverse the "circle of correlation" radially and not circumferentially like the "distance lines". Other eyes may also show a "single tube iris" where the iris appears to be traversed by but a single blood vessel rather than showing the hills and valleys created by many blood vessels which appear to form lumps.

One can clearly see how the
circle of adaptation is folded. The significance of it may be that it is an indication of how much the pupil has constricted. The more constricted, the larger and more pronounced the folds because the tissue of the CA has nowhere else to go.
I do not think that a pupil which does not respond to light would ever show any folds.

Each of these features presented above has almost innumerable variations which leads to the important question:
What is the significance of it? Are these variations related to how well a racing pigeon flies or breeds as some claim or are they merely differences among individuals - differences like the color of their feathers, the shape of their heads, eye ceres or wattles, to mention just a few?
Anatomical Considerations

It is indeed remarkable how large the pigeon eyes are compared to the rest of the head and this is an indication how important sight must be to the survival of these birds. One moment of inattention and the pigeon becomes a meal for a predator of which there are so many in nature. Let us then have a better look at the structure of this eye:
It shares many similarities with our own eye, the major difference being the very large pecten, the functions of which include:There are also some other functions possible but hard scientific evidence for these is lacking: Let us therefore look at an image of a typical pigeon eye:
  1. A: represents that part of the iris covered by many blood vessels which hide the radial muscles underneath the surface. Contraction of these radial muscles causes the pupil to dilate.
  2. B: represents that area of the iris which contains many circular muscles, an indication of their presence being the "distance lines" in this "circle of correlation". Contraction of these circular muscles causes the pupil to constrict.
  3. G: is a fine membrane which we encountered already as the "circle of adaptation".
There are many lights/structures inside the pupil and it is important to ask ourselves what they could possibly be or we may run the risk of assuming structures which do not really exist in this eye. D: is a candidate for such wrong identification as many pigeon fanciers classified it as a "cluster". What bothered me about this identification was that I noticed the same similar looking "object" in a few pigeon eyes but:
Let us have a look at the "clusters" in both of these images, taken just seconds apart from the same bird. Besides their rapid "movement" please note that the "cluster" on the left is much larger than the "cluster" on the right. A structure cannot grow and shrink within a second to such an extend but this observation is consistent with the reflection of light from the pecten which will:
  1. give it the pebbly surface characteristics of the pecten.
  2. explain the rapid movemet
  3. explain the size differences

All other lights found inside the pupil are easier to figure out. Please re-label the puzzle above by placing the mouse cursor here. Have a look at the re-labelled eye above.

Thank God, there's some actual common sense to discover on eye-sign. Thanx Karl for the effort put into explaining the parts of the eye, which some people believe to be 'signs' showing how brilliant their breeders/racers are (while in fact their imagination is 'brilliant')

Excellent interactive explanation of the various facets of eyesign in pigeons. I'm not sure I know what they mean with regards to selecting breeders of race birds, but it is a facinating subject. Regardless,I like to see in a wide circle of correlation, depth of color in the iris, and a pupil that constricts to a pin point. Thanks Dr. Karl for your excellent work and website.

JOB WELL DONE KARL, ON THE EXPLANATIONS AS USED MOST IN NORTH AMERICA. THOSE COMMENTS POSTED AS MADE BY OTHERS FROM FOREIGN COUNTRIES ARE GIVEN INCORRECTLY TO OUR LEARNING PROCESS ABOUT THE EYE, & ALSO OMITS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CIRCLES OR SAYS THAT IT IS OF NO VALUE. WHICH IS A BIG MISTAKE. FOR THOSE WHO WHICH TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE EYESIGN THEY SHOULD USE THIS PARTICULAR PAGE TO DO SO. IT IS BY FAR THE MOST CORRECT TO DATE, BUT, HAS MANY THINGS WHICH NEED TO BE ADDED FOR FURTHER LEARNING AND TO MAKE IT A MORE PRECISE AND ACCURATE PAGE. I HOPE THAT ONE DAY THIS WILL TAKE PLACE. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK WITH THIS TO FULLFIL AND EDUCATE THE MASSES. 9/27/06

This circle of adaptation was always referred to as "Cilliary Muscles" by all the "know everything" Eyesign specialists like Bob Flemming of the USA. I HAD RECOGNIZED AND USED THIS CIRCLE INSIDE THE PUPIL TO PICK OUT BREEDING STOCK AND GOOD RACER. I EVEN WENT SO FAR AS TO PICK OUT THE BEST PRODUCERS IN MANY LOFTS FROM AS FAR BACK AS THE 70'S /80'S. I EVEN PRESENTED DIAGRAMS, AND MADE REFERENCE TO THIS ON DISCUSSION WEB SITES FOR ALL TO LEARN HOW TO GET GOOD STOCK BIRDS FROM THE VERY BEGINING. THERE ARE A LOT OF FANCIERS IN SOUTH AFRICA THAT KNEW WHAT TO LOOK FOR INSIDE THE PUPIL OF A PIGEONS EYE AND I MUST SAY MANY OF THEM WANTED TO KEEP THIS A SECREAT AND DID NOT WANT TO IMPART THIS KNOWLEDGE TO THE NEW GENERATION OF RACING FANCIERS. THEY WERE SCARED TO GET BEATEN IN THEIR OWN GAME AND DID NOT HAVE THE B?LL? TO FACE GOOD COMPETITION. I AM SO GLAD THAT YOU MANAGED TO CAPTURE THIS ON CAMERA AND ILLUSTRATE BY MEANS OF DIAGRAM AND PHOTOS. NOW COME ON ALL OF YOU THAT BREED RACING PIGEONS TAKE NOTE AND GO FOR IT. IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE THAT HAS PIGEONS THAT BREED MULTI-WINNERS GO AND HAVE A LOOK AT THE PIGEONS AND LOOK INSIDE THE PUPIL OF SUCH PIGEONS AND YOU WILL KNOW HOW TO LOOK FOR BETTER BREEDING PIGEONS IN FUTURE. ITS NOT A SECREAT ANYMORE!!!!! IT HAS BEEN DISPLAYED FOR ALL TO SEE.
